Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested 48 students of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) for jubilating on the streets.
Luv FMs Erastus Asare Donkor who visited the scene reported on Adom FM's Morning Show, 'Dwaso Nsem' Wednesday that more than 14 students are also receiving treatment for injuries sustained after clashing with police late Tuesday afternoon.
According to him, the clash happened when some jubilant students of the school on their way back to campus after placing fourth in the zonal inter-school sports competition at the Baba Yara stadium, blocked the road leading from Amakom roundabout to KTI in Kumasi.
He reported that some students during the jubilation held up traffic and disturbed motorists by banging on their cars.
Erastus said the Police rushed to the scene to control the situation, and instructed the students to use an alternative route so traffic flow would resume.
However, some students refused to heed the police orders and as a result the police in retaliation assaulted some students and started firing tear gas to disperse them.
The police, he noted chased the students to their campus, put out the lights and stormed their dormitories to beat them up.
Alarmed by the reaction of the police, some students removed louvre blades of their dormitories and jumped out of them to escape the police brutalities. This led to injuries to many.
He said four teachers were also beaten mercilessly by the police and two were arrested when they tried to intervene.
It took the intervention of some military personnel to bring the situation under control.
The injured he said are receiving treatment at the Anwiam hospital at Afful Nkwanta.
